Looking to straighten your teeth? At Okotoks Orthodontics, we offer braces as a treatment option for our patients who are looking to correct teeth misalignment and restore proper form and function to their smiles.

What are braces?

Braces are a combination of brackets and wires that shift your teeth through constant, gentle pressure on your teeth.

Are braces really necessary?

Although some may get braces for purely aesthetic reasons, it is important to understand the health benefits braces can provide. With straighter teeth, an individual can more effectively bite, chew, and even speak.

Properly aligned teeth can also contribute to overall oral health. Straighter teeth are easier to brush, clean, and floss.

The ability to take better care of your teeth through proper oral hygiene helps prevent future cavities and periodontal disease.

Do I need braces?

You may require braces if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • misaligned teeth
  • crowded teeth
  • overbite
  • underbite
  • open bite
  • crossbite

Do braces hurt?

When braces are being applied, there is usually minimal pain.

As you wear your braces, you may feel some discomfort as teeth begin to realign.

Discomfort is usually experienced for a few days after the application of braces and when adjustments are made during orthodontist appointments.

Discomfort from treatment for most people can seem inconvenient, but is highly manageable.

How long do I need to wear my braces?

It depends. Treatment time varies for each individual, and depends on every patients personal orthodontic needs.

Treatment progress is monitored in regular intervals, typically every 4-6 weeks. At these appointments, brackets and wires are often adjusted to continue shifting your teeth into the correct position.

Typically, braces can be worn anywhere from 1 to 2 years or more.
